Children and youth welcomed into the Senate Chamber on National Child Day

– The Senate of Canada will open its doors to over 200 children and youth Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. in honour of National Child Day.


Headlining the festivities are internationally renowned recording artists The Barenaked Ladies and up-and-coming Edmonton-based country singer Marlee Scott.  Children will also tell their stories through spoken word, song and dance in the Senate Chamber.  Open media coverage.


The National Child Day celebration is jointly hosted by Senator Jim Munson (Ottawa – Rideau Canal) and Senator Terry Mercer (Nova Scotia – Northend Halifax).  This year’s theme will celebrate “For the Love of Children.”


Prior to the festivities in the Senate Chamber, Senator Jim Munson (Ottawa / Rideau Canal) and Senator Terry Mercer (Nova Scotia – Northend Halifax) will address assembled guests at approximately 8:15 a.m. at a breakfast reception in honour of retiring Senator Landon Pearson (Ontario) in the Senate Foyer.  Open media coverage.


National Child Day commemorates the unanimous adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989. Canada ratified the Convention in December 1991.
